English Mastiffs - Breeders - Are They Dangerous?
English Mastiffs are thought to be friendly, easy-going dogs. Numerous owners state that English Mastiffs like playing with children and bear all their actions, both consistent and inconsistent, with fortitude. Those who own the breed will hardly agree to the statement that the English Mastiff is potentially dangerous for their family and society on the whole.
On the contrary, lawmakers are worried about the dog's huge size and inability of irresponsible owners to control their dogs. According to them, English Mastiff owners do not have enough time and desire to train their dogs properly. It creates a number of bad-mannered dogs that can be rather threatening for the neighborhood.
A sort of suspicious attitude towards the English Mastiff on the part of public is fueled by some headlines. News columns tell us horrid stories about children and adults injured by Mastiff-like dogs, Bull Terriers, and other breeds. Many countries are seeking the solution to the problem, Germany being one of the most active ones in introducing breed specific legislation.
However, English Mastiff owners are not willing to let their favorite breed perish. They claim that there is a kind of prejudice against the English Mastiff and other breeds. In their opinion, these negative moods are rooted in the English Mastiff's historic past. It is a well-known fact that the ancestors of the dog were used to fight lions and other strong animals. They also entertained the crowd in bull-baiting, a bloody sport banned in the 19th century. Who can guarantee that the viciousness of the English Mastiff's ancestors does not show in present day dogs?
This question can be referred to almost any medium-, or large-sized breed of dog. German Shepherds, for instance, are leading in the statistics showing the rate of bites by breed. It does not follow, though, that the German Shepherd is a dangerous breed and should be banned by a special law.
An overt statement, "There are no bad dogs, there are bad owners" grows especially acute in the light of the related discussions. English Mastiff owners should put a lot of work into training their dogs from an early age.
Various canine clubs and public organizations insist that obedience training is essential for any breed of dog. Careful breeding is also the matter of great importance. Puppies with sound personalities should be the goal of any responsible breeder. Only under the following conditions will English Mastiffs make amiable dogs posing no threat for the society.
