This is actually a giant breed of a dog and is a descendant from the ancient Alaunt and Molosser. The general term is referred to many different breeds around the world, probably all descended from the same rootstock. They make good watchdogs and pet companions.

On the whole the breed is rather healthy though there are some diseases the dog can be prone to: CHD, gastric torsion, ectropion, PPM, vaginal hyperplasia, elbow dysplasia and PRA and occasionally to cardiomyopathy. The coat of the dog is rather short and therefore easy to groom. An english mastiff puppy requires early training, beginning as young puppies.
